SCRAG MOUNTAIN MUSIC Equity Statement
Since our inception, Scrag Mountain Music has been committed to our community and dedicated to facilitating meaningful musical experiences for our audience through the music we present. This dedication includes healing cultural and social wounds and providing opportunities for our audience to expand their definition of what classical chamber music is so as to include more diverse voices.
We recognize that classical chamber music has largely white, male Euro-centric roots and we commit to building our awareness and that of our audiences’ of prejudicial practices based on race, gender, sexuality, and any other defining marginalized identity both in the classical music world and in our communities. We commit to celebrating composers and musicians of diverse race, gender, and sexuality. We commit to presenting physically and financially accessible performances, open to all.
To achieve these goals Scrag Mountain Music plans to look at each step of our planning process through a lens of equity. We will:
⁃ Educate our staff and board about systemic marginalization.
⁃ Choose programming for each concert based on this revitalized scope.
⁃ Develop relationships with diverse populations throughout Vermont.
⁃ Work with other small organizations seeking to foster change.
We invite your feedback as we work toward greater equity and deeper cultural and social responsibility in our presentation of classical chamber music.
