ABOUT SCRAG MOUNTAIN MUSIC
Since its inception, Scrag Mountain Music has connected audiences with great music and artists in meaningful ways and has fostered a rejuvenating environment for musicians to explore chamber music and interface with the Vermont community. Scrag Mountain Music was created in 2010 by Founders and Artistic Directors Evan Premo (composer and double bass) and Mary Bonhag (soprano). Inspired by the chamber music festivals they experienced throughout the country, Evan and Mary sought to create a space where artists and community directly relate and enrich one another, where the locale is equally as important as the music making, and where the music is community supported and accessible to all.
From its origins, Scrag has set itself apart with its unique motto "Come as you are. Pay what you can." Audience members are encouraged to "pay what they can," trusting that those with more means will support those with less, trusting that we take care of each other as a community. Inspired by the work Evan did with master teaching artists during his time at Carnegie Hall, Scrag Mountain Music explores how interactive performance can be brought into the concert experience and how to attract new audiences to classical music.
What was once an experiment is now a reality. Now in our 14th season, Scrag Mountain Music continues to grow and expand. Our renewed vision for Scrag is one of "healing and connection in musical service to our community." It is "Music as Grace for all of life's stages." We hope you will join us!

Mission Statement
Scrag Mountain Music connects communities in Vermont to classical music in a powerful way by presenting innovative, interactive, and affordable performances of top-tier chamber music.
Scrag's Logo
Scrag Mountain Music's logo includes a drawing by Eishin Yoshida of a beautiful, rare, small alpine plant in the rose family, native to the northeast known as Mountain Avens or Geum peckii. We at Scrag Mountain Music take inspiration from this plant in our programming; its delicate yellow flower represents music's ephemeral beauty, and its thick and shaggy roots represent musical grit. Both the flower and the root are necessary for the Mountain Avens to thrive in harsh alpine conditions just as contrasting styles, moods, genres, emotions, and harmonies are necessary for chamber music to stay relevant and make a difference in this world.
Community Supported Chamber Music
How Scrag defines it:
- All are welcome. “Come as you are. Pay what you can.” This motto allows everyone to experience great chamber music no matter what they can afford.
- We create community. Whether enjoying a string quartet in the warm barn space at Green Mountain Girls Farm or mingling in the Warren United Church post-performance, we create community around music.
- We create concert experiences. Beyond just listening to live music, we help our audiences relate to the music they hear by offering anecdotes and activities that open ears, minds, and hearts.
