ARTIST Note

Music of the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods has the ability to transport us back to a time when rules about harmony and rhythm were still being adapted and when life moved at a slower pace. During these times (and really up until more recently), music was an integral part of the daily fabric of life, whether in a monastery or at court. Music was practical as it was artful.

I  love singing early music, and so it is always a pleasure to have the opportunity to share this repertoire and its sometimes unfamiliar sounds (and instruments!) with our community. If you haven’t heard of a theorbo - a six-foot lute - you are not alone! I have two degrees in music and only learned of this large lute five or so years ago.

This program brings us back in time with us with a work by living composer Matthew Ricketts that invokes the spirit of early music without representing it directly. It then highlights the music of John Dowland, G.F. Handel, Henry Purcell, and others whose music was meant to entertain, please, delight, and nourish the souls and senses of royalty and the nobility who surrounded them. - Mary Bonhag
