Sun., Oct. 29 @ 4 pm I Warren Church 339 Main St., Warren
Scrag presents Sacred Songs of the Mary’s, a program of ecstatic and contemplative early and early-inspired music that connects back to the Divine Mother Mary and Mary Magdalene. Scrag co-Artistic Directors Mary Bonhag (soprano) and Evan Premo (bass and viola da gamba) are joined by celebrated classically trained musician, sound healing practitioner, and founding member Anonymous 4, Ruth Cunningham (voice, recorder, harp, and flute), on works by Hildegard of Bingen, Kathy Wonson Eddy, and others. The program also includes a new chant by Cunningham based on the text from the non-canonical gospel of Mary Magdalene. Listen here for some of the sacred sounds you will hear on this program.
Sounds of Transformation Workshop
Sat., Oct. 28 @ 2 - 3:30 pm I The Old Meeting House Parish House 1620 Center Rd., East Montpelier
This workshop, led by Ruth Cunningham, will introduce practices of humming, toning, as well as singing chants and songs. Using the breath and voice helps to quiet the mind and open yourself for connection to spirit. All these tools can be used to create a daily sound practice to continue after the workshop. In this workshop, we will explore ways of experiencing music and how to use music and sound more effectively in daily life. In addition to sound the group makes together, Ruth will create meditative music using voice, medieval harp, and flute created specifically for the group of people gathered.
Ruth Cunningham is a sound healing practitioner and was a founding member of the group Anonymous 4. She specializes in early music performance as well as improvisational sacred music from varied spiritual traditions in both liturgical and concert settings. She works with individuals and groups on using the voice and music for healing and creating a spiritual practice using sound. With Anonymous 4, Ruth performed in concerts and festivals throughout the United States, Europe and the Far East and made thirteen recordings. She was a member of the core faculty for The Chartres Academy Wisdom School. www.ruthcunningham.com; http://www.youtube.com/ruthreid/
This event is a collaboration with the Old Meeting House Arts Ministry Committee and Scrag Mountain Music. No experience required. Space is limited.
